My ‘brick wall' is Sarah
Ann Cobler, b 29 Dec 1827 in Pa. or Va.? She died 4 Jun
1900 in Ft. Collins, Co. She was my great grandmother and wife
of Levi Hardinger (19 Mar 1909-9 Nov 1890) who was born and died
in Cumberland Valley Twp., Bedford County.
Frances Amelia (my grandmother)
and Virginia Victoria.
Tobias, Aaron & Martha
went to Colorado. After their father died they took Sarah Ann
back to Ft. Collins with them. On the 1860 census Joseph Cobler
is living with Levi and Sarah Ann.
Is he Sarah's brother?
On the 1880 census a Mary
Cobler (mother-in-law)
of Levi is with them.
I've been looking for 40
years for Sarah's family.

My Bedford County "brick
wall" is my gggrandfather George Kifer. We think he was
born in Bedford County in 1792. He married Catherine Ash. We
find him on the tax lists in 1812 and he sold his farm in Bedford
County and moved to Flintstone, MD in 1834.
There was quite a connection
to Artemis and also Chaneysville. I had an Aunt Nannie Senn in
Cumberland. She died in late 1950's. She always talked about visiting
Chaneysville and she mentioned the Bennett's. A Catherine
Ash
had a brother who married a Bennett. I am trying to find George Kifer's parents.
Does this sound familiar to
anyone. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. Clara

George Baughman

My brickwall is identifying
the PARENTS of my 4gr grandfather George Baughman. He was born
in 1804. This date is on his tombstone.
I have a letter from his granddaughter
who knew him that says, "Grandfather Baughman was a dear, and
I had many happy times on the farm. He was born on a farm where
Altoona (PA)now stands. It was so wild that he carried a rifle
and once, when bringing the cows home, he saw a bear in the path,
and killed it. This was considered a feat for a twelve year old.
He was the youngest of12 children,most of whom went West. His
sister, Elizabeth settled in Ohio. But I know very little about
his family. He lived for posterity, and his neighbors. Baughman
Chapel is his memorial." (I have Deed giving the church to
Methodist Episcapol trustees in 1854.)
George stayed in Huntingdon
Co, married Mary McCahan
and moved to East Providence Township,
Bedford Co. in 1848. Where he lived until his death in 1884.
Their children were:

William Josiah, b 1837, ... died in Civil War
George, b 1839 .... died in Civil War

Elizabeth Bell, b 1845 -1925, m ?Wigfield
Catherine, b 1849
The 1880 census gives George's
father as born in Germany and his mother born in Maryland.
The 1820 PA Federal census
lists a CHRISTIAN BAUGHMAN in Warriors Mark Township, Huntingdon
County, PA which would put George in the right county at age 16
..... but have not seen a copy of this to ascertain family size.
Christian is NOT seen in the 1810 OR 1830 census .....indicating
he might have moved away.
I have to think George's father
must have been born by 1760, perhaps coming as a small child with
parents, all born in GERMANY....... married about 1780 to a Maryland
girl ...... had 12 children by 1804..
I would be thrilled at any
new information or leads.
In reference to the posting
by Nance on August 31, 1999 regarding the George Baughman
Family:
I have found the Baughman
family in the query above simply by chance. Although I cannot
help in you finding his parents, perhaps we could discover some
other interesting information on his children.
According to the 1860 Census
of West Providence Twp., Bedford Co., PA, George Baughman
was the "neighbor" of my 4th g-grandpa John Mortimore.
(Note: You indicated East Providence) I checked the names and
ages you listed and everything appears to match very well.
In the 1870 Census of the
same Twp., the Baughman family is not listed, but Anna Baughman
(b. 1862, daughter of George or his son?) is living with my Mortimore
family. Also, James McCahan, who was apparently related to Mary McCahan Baughman,
is listed at the top of this sheet.
I have not done any further
research on this family since it has never been my main focus.
However, I was hoping someone could bring some information on
why this girl was living with another family.
